Giving to DMUsport
Being part of a sports club or team is often one of the most memorable and meaningful parts of university life. No matter the sport or level of play, the friendships formed and the sense of belonging can last a lifetime. Beyond the physical benefits, sport also plays a crucial role in supporting students' mental health and wellbeing.
We believe every student should have the opportunity to be active and enjoy sport. However, for many students from low-income households, essential items such as sportswear, equipment, or protective gear like mouthguards and goggles are simply unaffordable. At DMU, over a third of students came from deprived backgrounds in 2021/22, making the cost of sports participation a significant barrier for many.
The Sports Opportunity Fund provides small, accessible grants to help students with essential sports equipment. Our hope is that the fund helps create a level playing field for all students: and ensuring it is only personal dedication, not finance, that dictates sporting participation.
Through the Sports Opportunities Fund we can support students like Nikolle, who was given the opportunity to represent Slovakia in Lacrosse.
‘Funding from the Sports Opportunities Fund helped towards my flights, accommodation and team fee and kit. The funding from DMU really helped me with my trip. I had such an amazing time representing my country in a tournament which has led to further development in the sport. It has also led to future opportunities to represent Slovakia in lacrosse.’

Examples of the difference funding can make:
- £50 buys competition standard swimwear
- £250 for travel to national championships or competitions
- £1,000 could provide well-fitting and sport appropriate sports bras for 25 people who require them
We’re also keen to partner with sportswear brands, kit providers, and sporting bodies who can support our cause with donations or discounts.
