What you will study

Block 1: Introduction to Moving Image Production

Introduction to Moving Image Production: Foundations in Short Film Storytelling.

This module offers a comprehensive introduction to audio-visual storytelling through short film production. Designed for students with no prior experience, it also supports those with some background to enhance their skills to a professional standard. Covering essential techniques in camera work, sound, and editing, you will engage in workshops, seminars, and collaborative exercises. Working in production teams, you will gain practical insight into the short film process and the roles of key crew members.

Block 2: Film and Photography Capture

This module introduces you to the fundamental techniques, practices, and theories of lens-based media, covering both photography and video. You will develop core photography skills, from image capture and manipulation to final output, applying these techniques in practical coursework. In parallel, you will explore video production, progressing through concept development, pre-production, production, and post-production stages. Emphasis is placed on narrative construction across both media, alongside proficiency in relevant camera equipment and software. Reflective written documentation of practical work supports critical understanding and skill development.

Block 3: Film Storytelling

This module explores the essential principles of filming storytelling and narrative, guiding you to understand what makes a compelling story and how stories are shaped for screen adaptation. Through a theoretical framework covering genre and audience, you will examine a diverse range of examples, from international and independent films to avant-garde and mainstream Western cinema. The module combines critical analysis of storytelling, genre conventions, and Classical Hollywood narrative and visual style with practical exercises that foster creativity and deepen understanding of visual storytelling techniques.

Block 4: Commercial Content Production

From Concept to Campaign.

This module immerses you in professional media industry practices through a practical creative brief, challenging them to develop a commercial content idea. You will explore industry research, consumer insight, and the role of media agencies to understand how concepts evolve from initial ideas to campaign design, content production, and creative execution.

Critical reflection on the creative process and strategic application within client parameters are key components. You will consider the social and cultural contexts influencing the creative industries, develop and implement media production responses, and evaluate how final outputs align with brief objectives.

Designed to introduce foundational commercial media practices, this module also enhances employability by combining critical inquiry with practical media production skills.

Block 1: Film and photography techniques

Film and Photography Techniques: Advanced Skills in Lens-Based Media and Motion Graphics.

This module provides you with the opportunity to advance their skills in lens-based media and motion graphics. You will develop proficiency in camera techniques alongside a range of motion graphic methods, applying their knowledge to design and production coursework. The module emphasizes narrative exploration in both photography and film, focusing on image capture and the presentation of work through multiple exhibitions. You will also produce written reflections and evaluations to demonstrate critical understanding of their practical work.

Block 2: Moving Image Portfolio

Exploring Styles and Distribution.

Building on foundational skills from the Introduction to Moving Image Production module, this module challenges you to complete three set briefs, each focused on distinct moving image styles and distribution platforms, including website content, corporate films, and short films utilizing archival material. Through technical workshops, you will explore diverse production techniques and distribution channels, with an emphasis on experimentation across stylistic approaches and creative processes.

Block 3: Screenwriting

This module introduces you to the craft of narrative screenwriting, beginning with idea generation and the fundamentals of storytelling, including narrative structure, character development, and dialogue. You will study story structure theories and learn to write outlines and scripts using industry-standard software.

The module also examines the roles of the script editor, director, and producer in supporting screenwriters, alongside guidance on navigating different script markets. Through workshop sessions, you will develop their own original outlines and scripts, culminating in a reflective report detailing their creative process.

Block 4: Creative Enterprise

This module enhances employability by introducing you to enterprise practices, equipping you with essential business and entrepreneurial skills. You will learn how to leverage their media expertise to address identified gaps in the industry market.

The module offers insights into various business models for early-career entrepreneurs and strategies for positioning themselves in a competitive creative sector. Delivered through visual and practical methods, it encourages you to develop and refine creative business ideas toward commercial viability.

You will also explore the needs of the local creative community, third-sector organizations, and skills shortages in surrounding areas, identifying enterprise opportunities that apply their media practice skills to meet real market demands.

As part of this course, you will have the option to complete a paid placement year which offers invaluable professional experience.

Our award-winning Careers Team can help you secure a placement through activities such as mock interviews and practice aptitude tests, and you will be assigned a personal tutor to support you throughout your placement.

Block 1: Short Film Production

From Concept to Completion.

This module consolidates technical skills from previous levels to establish a professional filmmaking practice focused on the short fiction film format. You will research, pitch, develop, and produce a short film individually or in small teams, simulating industry collaboration.

Workshops guide you through key filmmaking processes, offering opportunities for experimentation before the main project. Emphasizing creative storytelling, professional workflows, and technical craft, the module assumes prior familiarity with camera, sound, and editing equipment and software.

Block 2: Documentary Production

Practical Skills, Storytelling, and Collaborative Production.

This module immerses you in key aspects of non-fiction filmmaking through practical workshops and film text presentations. You will develop their creative skills by exploring documentary production techniques and workflows across planning, production, and post-production stages.

Seminars introduce foundational concepts of non-fiction storytelling, including narrative structure, interviewing, point of view, and ethical considerations. You will collaborate in small production teams—comprising Director/Producer, Camera Operator, and Sound Recordist/Editor—to produce a short documentary film (6–10 minutes).

Critical reflection on individual roles and creative practice is integrated through a written report, fostering professional development alongside practical experience.

Block 3: Film Festivals, Marketing and Distribution

Audience Engagement and Festival Strategy.

This module explores industry practices for audience engagement and maximizing the commercial potential of film projects. Building on short films produced in the Short Film Production module, you will individually create an Electronic Press Kit and develop a Festival Strategy.

You will gain insight into audience targeting, promotional tools, and marketing and distribution mechanisms within the film industry. The module also examines the global film festival landscape, focusing on independent filmmaking and entry-level perspectives relevant to emerging filmmakers and early-career professionals in film business and programming.

Block 4: Portfolio Project

This module requires you to research, plan, develop, and create a practical artefact within an area of media production aligned with their vocational interests, such as cinematography, VFX, radio production, social media, or web design. Building on prior knowledge, you will demonstrate connections between their project and broader programme studies.

The module develops advanced research and academic writing skills, preparing you for postgraduate study and enhancing employability through transferable analytical abilities. The practical artefact supports career progression—whether as a portfolio piece, showreel, postgraduate application, or live brief project.

You will present your work to an audience, engage with feedback, and critically reflect on their creative process and outcomes. This comprehensive project serves as a significant addition to a professional portfolio.
