This course allows you to dive into the latest medical breakthroughs, equipping you with the skills and knowledge to pursue a variety of careers in the ever‑evolving field of medical science.

Our Medical Science programme combines hands-on learning with real-world clinical experience, focusing on both the science of the human body and the practical skills needed to make a difference in healthcare. You’ll be supported by expert staff and benefit from personalised teaching that puts your needs first.

In the first year, you’ll build essential knowledge in chemistry, anatomy, microbiology, and professional skills. Year two focuses on understanding the healthy body and disease processes, while in your final year, you’ll conduct an independent research project and develop crucial skills in time management, critical thinking, and scientific communication.

With practical training in techniques like ELISAs, cell culture, histology, ECGs, SDS-PAGE and western blotting, history taking, measurement of vital signs, providing first aid, you’ll gain hands-on experience that prepares you for real-world challenges.

  • Industry experience: Take advantage of an optional year-long placement opportunity to explore real-world applications of medical science in research and clinical environments. What you will study

Professional & Practical Skills

An introduction to clinical lab skills, from benchwork, to professionally analysing and communicating your findings.

Chemistry & Biochemistry

This module examines the basic principles of chemistry and biochemistry that apply to healthcare, such as genetics and mechanisms behind diagnostic tests. 

Anatomy & Physiology

This module covers the basics of key organ systems and relevance in human health and disease. 

Microbiology

Microbiology goes beyond human cells, and starts to cover bacterial and viral cells, covering global infectious disease.

Genetics & Molecular Pathology

This module will integrate genetics and genomic into the context of human health, laboratory techniques, and inheritance. 

Organ Systems Physiology

Building on from the Anatomy & Physiology module, this module will further explore diagnostic tests and organ systems, focusing on disease states.

Clinical Perspectives

This module will introduce students to a patient-centred care including basic clinical skills, infection prevention and infection control. It will also provide an informed, research-based understanding of infection/immunity related clinical cases to produce graphical timeline.  

Evidence Based Medicines

This module discusses what constitutes good medical and scientific evidence, not only from the quality of publication but by understanding the research methodologies and designs used, and the possibilities of bias.

During this course you will have the option to complete a paid placement year, an invaluable opportunity to put the skills developed during your degree into practice. This insight into the professional world will build on your knowledge in a real-world setting, preparing you to progress onto your chosen career.

Students have previously undertaken placement opportunities at Institute of Lung Health at Glenfield Hospital, Clintec and private healthcare organisations.

Endocrinology: an integrated approach

This module focuses on the aetiology and pathogenesis of endocrine diseases, clinical treatments, the impact of lifestyle and the latest research/medical advances in this field. It will also focus on some areas of controversy within this area.

Cancer Biology and Clinical Pharmacology

This module will provide the student with an understanding of the causes and pathophysiological basis of different types of cancers, including advances in therapeutic options. The principles that underpins pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and pharmacotherapy will also be explored.

Advanced Clinical Perspectives

This module will further patient-centred care aspects which were first introduced in Clinical Perspectives (MSCI2704). This module also explores the complex health issues along with the management plans, medical advances and strategies in public health.

Research and Innovation

This module gives students the opportunity to design and execute an independent research study. Studies may be laboratory, clinical, scientific literature or educational in nature. This module also incorporates Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Health & Safety for laboratory practice as well as statistical analysis of scientific, clinical and educational data.

You’ll learn through a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars, tutorials, and hands-on lab sessions to build both core and advanced knowledge. Some modules use problem-based learning, encouraging teamwork and independent study through real-world case studies. Lab work reinforces theory and develops skills in experimental design, problem-solving, data analysis, and scientific communication.

eLearning supports your understanding of complex biological processes with animations and simulations, while also helping develop skills in bioinformatics, information retrieval, and critical appraisal.

Assessment methods vary by module and skill level, including exams, coursework, lab tasks, presentations, and project reports. Informal assessments like online quizzes and phase tests help you track your progress throughout the course.

Our facilities

Medical Science facilities - copy

Substantial investment in Health and Life Sciences has developed our teaching and learning facilities to help you develop your practical experience and theoretical knowledge beyond the classroom.

Medical Science students benefit from recently refurbished teaching laboratory space, with attached cell culture facilities. Students will have access to many different types of taught practical sessions and laboratories, for microbiology, biochemistry, and research, in different group sizes and scenarios. Later in the course, students will also access specialised laboratory spaces when conducting their final year UG research projects.

Medical Science students also benefit from the state-of-art clinical skills suites which allow students to learn and practice in a safe environment. Students will receive guidance and support from staff to ensure that you develop a precise and accurate practical ability in the clinical skills suites.

DMU Global

Our innovative international experience programme DMU Global aims to enrich studies, broaden cultural horizons and develop key skills valued by employers. 

ճdzܲ , we offer an exciting mix of overseas, on-campus and online international experiences, including the opportunity to study or work abroad for up to a year.

The DMU Global initiative has seen Medical Science students explore preventative healthcare in Berlin, raise awareness of type 2 diabetes in Kentucky and perform a parasitological and public health research study in New York.

Our Careers Team can help to hone your professional skills with mock interviews and practice aptitude tests, and an assigned personal tutor will support you throughout your placement.

Graduate careers

To help students prepare for specific career choices, we provide a professional careers team, careers conferences, employment talks, and an alumni initiative where graduates offer advice based on their experiences, including those who have progressed into postgraduate medicine and dentistry, research, and clinical laboratory careers.

Graduate opportunities exist in medical research, writing, education, commerce, and sales. This course also serves as an appropriate entry qualification for graduates wishing to pursue further study in graduate entry medicine, physician associate, pharmacy, dentistry, or NHS medical care practitioner training.

Recent graduates have gone on to work at:

Access course

112 UCAS Tariff Access to HE Diploma ‘Science’ with 15 credits at Distinctions in science specific modules and 30 credits at Merit.

Students applying for courses starting in September will be made offers based on the latest UCAS Tariff.

Additional costs

The core textbooks for all modules are available in the Kimberlin Library, and journal articles in your reading lists are also mostly available electronically from your myDMU login.

Some students like to purchase their own text books or print course documents and we suggest allowing approximately £200 per year for this.

All students are required to pay for their DBS check if required for your programme or placement.

In addition students will be required to pay for their travel costs to placements or project locations.

All students are provided the opportunity to participate in DMU Global trips. These trips are subsidised by the University, and the cost and subsidy varies by location.
